The 250km Peace Walk from Ieper to Kleine Brogel began with a reception for walkers hosted by the city of Ieper. The deputy mayor began by explaining the links between Ieper and Hiroshima. Both saw the first use of weapons of mass destruction, both cities were destroyed by war. The city of Ieper has been playing a leading role in the "Mayors for Peace" campaign for nuclear disarmament.
